The word scroll is basically referred to a roll of paper, parchment or papyrus. The scroll is either written or drawn upon. One can classify scrolls on the basis of its uses. Scroll can be used for art is known as scroll art, scroll painting, hanging scroll and handscroll. The scroll art is referred to a paper or parchment containing an element of ornament or graphic design featuring spirals and rolling incomplete circle motifs. These were known to often based on plants. Scrollwork was a piece of ornament dominated by motifs and can be found in various artistic museums. Scroll painting is generally defined as painting on a scroll and is yet distinguished by the Asians traditions as handscroll and hanging scroll. Handscroll is scroll having a painting in a horizontal format on the contrary hanging scroll has one in a vertical format. These scrolls were of very high importance in the earlier times as the invention of books has not been done by then. In order to record history and other such documents, scrolls were the only means of preservation. They were also used in sending messages from one place to another and putting down signatures in order to seal contracts.
