A satellite is an object that has been placed into orbit for a certain purpose using a launch vehicle. These objects are called artificial satellites to distinguish them from natural satellites which are generally referred to as the celestial bodies that periodically orbit a planet.Satellites have many applications. Among several other uses, they can be used to draw maps of stars and planetary surfaces and also take pictures of planets that they are launched into. Some common types of satellite include civilian and military Earth observation satellites, communications satellites, weather satellites, navigation satellites and space telescopes. Human spacecraft in orbit and space stations are also satellites.
Satellites can operate by themselves or as a part of a larger system such as a satellite formation or satellite constellation.The orbits of the satellites vary tremendously depending on their purpose and are classified in a number of ways. Major categories include geostationary orbit, low Earth orbit, polar orbit.
A launch vehicle, which is a rocket, is used to place a satellite into orbit by lifting it off from a launch pad on land. Some are also launched at sea from a submarine or a mobile maritime platform. They can be launched aboard a plane as well. Satellites are computer-controlled semi independent systems. The subsystems of satellites attend many tasks such as power generation, communication, attitude control, thermal control, telemetry, scientific instrumentation, etc.
