An army helicopter is the one which is either intently built or converted for use by military forces. The most common use of army helicopters is transportation of troops. Transport helicopters can be modified or converted to perform other missions as well, such as combat search and rescue (CSAR), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), airborne command post, or even armed with weapons for attacking ground targets. There are specialized army helicopters which intend to conduct specific missions. Some specialized army helicopters are attack helicopters, observation helicopters and anti-submarine warfare helicopters. Army helicopters play an integral role in the sea, land and air operations conducted by modern militaries. Generally manufacturers develop airframes in different weight/size classes which can be modified as per the different roles by installing mission specific equipments. In order to minimize development costs, the basic airframes can be stretched and shortened, replaced with new engines and electronics and have the entire mechanical and flight systems made accordingly. Modern army helicopters have introduced modular systems which allow the same airframe to be configured for different roles. Taking as an instance, we have the EH-101 in Royal Navy service that can be rapidly configured for ASW or transport missions in hours. The systems can be fitted to only those airframes that need it, or when finances allow the purchase of enough units. Most army helicopters are armoured to a significant extent, however, all the equipments are limited to the installed power and lift capability and the limits installed equipment places on useful payload.
