Butterflies are beautiful looking insects with wings and various colours. Adult butterflies have giant, usually bright-coloured wings, and conspicuous, flapping flight. The cluster includes the big taxon Papilionoidea that contains a minimum of one former cluster, the skippers (formerly the taxon 'Hesperioidea', most up-to-date analyses recommend it also contains the moth-butterflies (formerly the taxon 'Hedyloidea'). Butterfly fossils date to the Paleocene epoch that was concerning fifty-six million years past.
Butterflies have the standard four-stage insect life cycle. Winged adults lay eggs on the food plant on that their larvae, referred to as caterpillars, will feed. The caterpillars grow, generally terribly chop-chop, and once totally developed, acquire in a very pupa. Once metamorphosis is complete, the immature skin splits, the adult insect climbs out, and when its wings have distended and dried, it flies off. Some butterflies, particularly within the tropics, have many generations in a very year, whereas others have one generation, and some in cold locations might take many years to tolerate their entire life cycle.
Butterflies area unit usually polymorphic, and plenty of species create use of camouflage, mimicry and aposematic to evade their predators. Some, just like the monarch and therefore the painted girl, migrate over long distances. Several butterflies area unit attacked by parasites or parasitism, together with wasps, protozoans, flies, and alternative invertebrates, or area unit preyed upon by alternative organisms. Some species-area unit pests as a result of in their larval stages they will harm domestic crops or trees; alternative species-area unit agents of fecundation of some plants. Larvae of some butterflies (e.g., Harvesters) eat harmful insects, and some area unit predators of ants, whereas others live as mutualists in association with ants. Culturally, butterflies area unit a preferred motif within the visual and literary arts.
