A frog is any member of a largely carnivorous and diverse group of tailless, short-bodied amphibians that belong to the order Anura which literally means without tail in Ancient Greek. The oldest fossil called "proto-frog" was found in the early Triassic of Madagascar, but molecular clock dating suggests their origins may extend further back to the Permian, which was 265 million years ago. Ranging from the tropics to subarctic regions, frogs are widely distributed, but the greatest concentration of diversity of the species is in tropical rainforests. There are over 6,300 recorded species that account for about 88% of extant amphibian species. They also belong to one of the five most diverse vertebrate orders. Warty frog species tend to be called toads, however, the distinction between frogs and toads is informal and not from terminology or evolutionary history. An adult frog has protruding eyes, anteriorly-attached tongue, a stout body with limbs folded underneath and no tail (except in tailed frogs). Frogs have glandular skin which have secretions that range from distasteful to toxic. Their skin varies in colour from grey, green and well-camouflaged dappled brown to vivid patterns of bright red or yellow and black to exhibit toxicity and ward off predators. Adult frogs live on dry land or in fresh water and some species are adapted for living underground or in trees.
