Knight is a person, generally a male who is granted an honorary title of knighthood by the head of the state which might even include the pope or representative to the service of the monarch, the country or the church, especially in a military capacity. The background of the knights and knighthood can be traced back to the era of Greek hippeis and Roman eques of classical antiquity. In Europe in the Early Middle Ages, knighthood was conferred upon mounted warriors. Later knighthood was considered a class of lower nobility in the High Middle Ages. The rank had become associated with the ideals of chivalry, which was supposed to be a code of conduct for a perfect courtly Christian warriors, this rank came in association in the Late Middle Ages.

Very commonly, a knight was a vassal who served as a bodyguard, an elite fighter or a mercenary for a lord and got its payment in the form of land holdings. The knights who were skilled in battle on horseback were very much trusted by the lords. In the Middle Ages, knighthood was closely linked with horsemanship, having its origin in the 12th century, until it became a fashion for high nobility in the Duchy of Burgundy in the 15th century.
