Foxes are omnivorous mammals that range in sizes from small to medium while belonging to several genera of the family Canidae. Foxes have upright triangular ears, a flattened skull, a pointed and slightly upturned snout and a long bushy tail which is often called brush. There are twelve species that belong to the monophyletic "true foxes" group of genus Vulpes. Approximately another 25 extinct or current species are always or sometimes called foxes. These foxes are either a member of the paraphyletic group of the South American foxes, or of the outlying group, which consists of gray fox, bat-eared fox and island fox. Foxes have inhabited every continent except Antarctica. So far the most common and widespread species of fox is the red fox which is in scientific terminology referred to as Vulpes vulpes with about 47 recognized subspecies. The global diversification of foxes, together with their widespread reputation as cunning, has contributed to their prominence in folklore and popular culture in many societies around the world. The hunting of foxes with packs of hounds desire an established pursuit in Europe, especially on the British Isles. Thus, they were exported to various parts of the New World by the European settlers.
