Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an American superhero film released in 2016, featuring the DC Comics characters Batman and Superman. It is a follow-up to Man of Steel released in 2013 and the second installment in the DC Extended Universe, abbreviated as DCEU. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer which features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, and Gal Gadot. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the first live-action film that features Batman and Superman together along with the first live-action cinematic portrayal of Wonder Woman. In the film, criminal mastermind Lex Luthor pulls Batman's strings, manipulating him into a preemptive battle with Superman, whom Luthor is obsessed with. The film was announced after the release of Man of Steel, at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Snyder asserted that the film would be inspired by the Batman comic book series The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller but clarified that it would still follow an original premise. Serving as a cinematic reboot of the character, the incarnation of Batman in the film is much different from the previous portrayal of the character in The Dark Knight Trilogy.
