Grim reaper is used in text in order to personify death. Death is many times imagined as a personified force. Grim Reaper is a character which emerges from some ancient mythologies, it is known to cause a person's death by coming personally to collect the person's soul. Whereas some other beliefs hold the Spectre of death only as psychopomp, it says that it only serves as the last ties between the soul and the body, and it's work is to guide the deceased to the afterlife, without having any power or control on how or when the victim dies.
Most often, death is personified in a male form, whereas certain cultures have it personified as a female. Ankou is a special figure in the Breton folklore used to portend death. It is said to be the spirit of the last person that died within the community, it happens to appear as a tall, haggard figure mostly with as wide hat and long white hair or sometimes even a skeleton with a revolving head. Dullahan is a similar creature which is portrayed in the Irish mythology, it's head would be tucked under her or his arm, these are not just one but a collective species.
