Peace symbols or peace signs refers to the signs or symbols which are used to reflect the parties willingness to maintain peace. Throughout the ages many symbols and signs have been used in many ways in various contexts and cultures. The Early Christians used the olive branch and dove as a symbol and eventually with the passage of time it became a secular peace symbol. It was popularised by the famous artist Pablo Picasso, after World War II. The peace sign which is famous today was designed and crafted by Gerald Holtman in the 1950s as the logo for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The CND was a group at the forefront of the peace movement in the UK, and after the same, the symbol was adopted by anti war and counterculture activists in the US and elsewhere in the world. One if sees the symbol with more concentration, they can notice that it is the superimposition of the semaphore signals for the letters N and D, used to stand for the cause of nuclear disarmament, while it also simultaneously acted as a reference to Goya's The Third of May 1808.
