Plate is a part of the tableware, it is a concave, broad, but mostly flat vessel on which food can be served. The uses of plates can be extended to its use in decorative and ceremonial purposes. Even though most of the plates are circular in shape, bit there also exist plates in almost any shape possible, and made of any material including the water resistant material. Often plates are raised round the edges, either by curving it up or a raised portion or wider lip. Vessels having no lip, specially if they have a more rounded profile are more likely to be considered as bowls or dishes and so are very large vessels with a plate shape.
Plates are both tableware and dishware. Plates can also be formed using clay (pottery) and wood. The use of wood, clay and metal go back to antiquity in many cultures. In the Western culture and many other cultures, the plate is considered as a typical form of vessel, off which food is eaten, and on which food is served, if it is not too liquid. The main rivals of plate in crockery is bowl, which predominates in for both purposes in South Asian cultures, for example.
