Plants belong to the kingdom plantae, they are mainly multicellular, majorly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom. Traditionally plants were treated as one of the two kingdoms including the living things that were not animals. It is to note that all the fungi and algae are treated as plants. But, all the other definitions of the kingdom plantae, exclude the fungi kingdom and some algae, as well as the prokaryotes. Prokaryotes include the bacteria and the archaea. Also when we go by one of the definitions, plants belonging to the clade Viridiplantae, a Latin name for the green plants, are the ones which includes the conifers, flowering plants and the other gymnosperms, hornworts, ferns and their allies, liverworts, green algae and mosses. But this excludes the brown and red algae. The plants which are green in colour get most of their food and energy from photosynthesis via the use of sunlight. Photosynthesis is carried by the leaves which contain the primary chloroplasts that are derived from endosymbiosis with cyanobacteria. The chloroplasts of such leaves and plants contain chlorophyll a and b, which in turn gives them the green colour. Some plants are mycotrophic or parasitic and have lost their ability to produce normal amounts of chlorophyll.
