Bees are flying insects which are known for their role in pollination are closely related to wasps and ants, and, in the case of the best-known bee species, the western honey bee, for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are adapted for feeding on pollen and nectar, primarily the latter, as an energy source and the former primarily for protein and other nutrients. Most of the pollen is used as food for larvae. Bee pollination is important from both, commercial and ecological aspects. The decline in the population of wild bees has increased the value of pollination by hives of honey bees that are managed commercially. Bees range in size from the largest species of leafcutter bee, Megachile pluto, whose females can attain a length of 39 millimetres or 1.54 inches to tiny stingless bee species whose workers are less than 2 millimetres long or 0.08 inches.
