A ship is a huge watercraft which travels the seas and oceans of the world and other sufficiently deep waterways. It helps in carrying passengers or goods, or in support of specialized missions like defense, research and fishing. Basically, when initially invented, a "ship" was a sailing vessel with at least three square-rigged masts and a full bowsprit. Ships have been important contributors to economy and commerce and human migration along with which they have also supported the spread of colonization and the slave trade and have served scientific, cultural, and humanitarian needs. The largest portion of the world commerce depends on the ship transports.
As of 2016, there have been more than 49,000 merchant ships, totaling almost 1.8 billion dead weight tons. Of these 28% 43% were bulk carriers, oil tankers and 13% were container ships.
Ships are generally larger than boats, but that is not a universally accepted distinction between them. Ships generally tend to remain at sea for periods longer than those of boats.Ship can be legally defined from the Indian Case Law as a vessel that carries goods by sea. A US Navy rule of thumb is that boats heel towards the inside of a sharp turn while ships heel towards the outside because of the relative location of the center of buoyancy versus the center of mass.
