Volkswagen, or VW, as abbreviated, is a German automaker founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front, a Nazi labour union and has its headquarter in Wolfsburg. It is the largest automaker by worldwide sales in 2016 and 2017 and is the flagship marque of the Volkswagen Group. The brand has its biggest market is in China which delivers nearly 40% of its sales and profits. Volkswagen in German language translates to "people's car". The company's current international advertising slogan is just "Volkswagen: Das Auto", referencing the name's meaning as “people's car” or “the car”. Volkswagen has factories in many parts of the world and manufactures and assembles vehicles for local markets. In addition to its plants in Germany, Volkswagen has many other manufacturing or assembly facilities in the United States, China, India, Mexico, Indonesia, Slovakia, Russia, Spain, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kenya and South Africa. Volkswagen was named in the top 25 largest companies in the world in 2011 by the Forbes Global 2000. Volkswagen has also been planning to start assembling certain engines in India to increase localization from 70% to 90%, as of May 2014. In January 2016, Volkswagen also announced setting up a new factory in Algeria during a summit between Angela Merkel, the German Vice Chancellor, and Algerian prime minister Abdelmalek Sellal.
