Rabbits are small mammals that belong to the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha along with the hare and the pika. The world's 305 breeds of domestic rabbit includes the European rabbit species and its descendants which come under Oryctolagus cuniculus. Sylvilagus includes 13 wild rabbit species among which there are seven types of cottontail. The European rabbit is familiar throughout the world as a wild prey animal and as a domesticated form of livestock and pet and has been introduced on every continent except Antarctica. With its widespread effect on ecologies and cultures, the rabbit, which is also commonly referred to as bunny, is, in many areas of the world, a part of daily lifeā€”as food, a companion, and as a source of artistic inspiration. Male rabbits are called bucks while female rabbits are called does. An older term for an adult rabbit is coney which is ultimately derived from the Latin word cuniculus. A common term for a young, hopping rabbit is bunny, however, this term is often used informally and mostly by children, while referring to rabbits, especially domestic ones. In the recent times, the term kit or kitten has also been used to refer to a young rabbit.
