Dark Souls is an action role-playing game launched in 2011 which was developed by FromSoftware and published by Namco Bandai Games. The game is the second instalment in the Souls series being the spiritual successor to FromSoftware's Demon's Souls. Dark Souls occurs in the fictional kingdom of Lordran where players take up the role of a cursed undead character who begins a pilgrimage to explore the fate of their kind. A port for Microsoft Windows was also released in August 2012 which featured additional content that was not seen in the original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. The new content was made downloadable for consoles, in October 2012,  under the subtitle Artorias of the Abyss. With many citing it as one of the greatest video games of all time, dark Souls received quite a critical acclaim. Critics have been resilient while praising the depth of its combat, intricate level design, and use of flavor text. However, the difficulty level of the game received mixed reviews, with many criticizing it for being too unforgiving. The original Windows version of the game was not so well-received with all the criticism directed at numerous technical issues. The game also had two sequels released in the mid-2010s.
