Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights which usually lasts for five days. It is celebrated during the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika which between mid October and mid November. Diwali is one of the most popular festivals of Hindus as it symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The festival is mainly associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. However, many regional traditions connect it to Sita and Rama, Vishnu, Durga, Kali, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman. 

The five-day festival originated in the Indian subcontinent and is mentioned in early Sanskrit texts to be celebrated eighteen days after the Dussehra festival, with Dhanteras, or the regional equivalent which marks the first day of the festival as the one when celebrants prepare by cleaning their homes and making designs on the floor, such as rangoli. The second day is Naraka Chaturdashi or the regional equivalent which for Hindus in the South India is proper Diwali. Western, central, eastern and northern Indian communities observe the main day of Diwali on the third day marked as the day of Lakshmi Pujan and its supposed to be the darkest night of the traditional month. In most parts of India, the day followed by the Lakshmi Puja is marked with the Govardhan Puja, which is for the sake of the relationship between wife and husband. Some Hindu communities mark the last day as Bhai Dooj or the regional equivalent, which signifies the bond between the sister and the brother. A few other Hindu and Sikh craftsmen communities mark this day as Vishwakarma Puja and celebrate it by performing maintenance in their work spaces and offering prayers.
