Just like all suids, pigs are highly social and intelligent animals. The domestic pig is among the most populous large mammals in the world, with around 1 billion individuals alive at any time. Pigs can consume a wide range of food and are omnivorous in nature. Due to their biological similarity to humans, pigs are frequently used for human medical research. A typical pig has a long snout which is strengthened by a special prenasal bone and by a disk of cartilage at the tip along with a large head. The snout is a very acute sense organ and is used to dig into the soil to find food. They have four hoofed toes on each foot out of which the two larger central toes bear the most of the weight, however, the outer two are also used on the soft ground. A pig has 44 teeth. The rear teeth are adapted for crushing.
