A clown is many times confused with a comedian who offers his services in a mime style. A clown is whereas a comic performer who tends to employ slapsticks or other such types of physical comedy by adhering to a mime style, most commonly. With significant variance in performances and costumes, clowns have a varied tradition. Auguste is the most recognizable modern day clown character or the red clown type, who is famous to have outlandish costumes, featuring a distinct kind of makeup, colourful wings, colourful clothing and exaggerated footwear. The entertainment style of clowns is designed such that they can entertain a large number of audience at one point of time.

Modern day clowns are more distinctively related to the tradition of circus clowns, which developed out of the earlier comedic parts in theatre and Variety shows during the nineteenth century and mid twenty century. In the modern day, many circus clowns have become popular and are a key circus act in their own style. Joseph Grimaldi was the first person to play the mainstream clown role, and was also the first one to create the traditional white face makeup design as costume. He expanded the role of clowns in the early 1800s to the extent it became part of the British pantomimes
