Jewellery consists of decorative items worn for personal adornment, such as brooches, necklaces, rings, pendants, earrings, cufflinks and bracelets. Jewellery may be attached to clothes or be worn over the body. The term is restricted to durable ornaments from a western perspective which excludes things such as flowers. The basic forms of jewellery may vary between cultures and are often extremely long-lived. The word jewellery itself has been derived from the word jewel, which was extracted from the Old French word "jouel" and beyond that, traces its origin to the Latin word "jocale" which means a plaything. In British English, New Zealand English, Indian English, Australian English, Hiberno-English, and South African English it is spelled jewellery, while in the American English, it is spelled as jewelry. Both terms are used in Canadian English, although jewelry prevails by a two to one margin. In French and a other European languages the equivalent term for the same, joaillerie, may also cover decorated metalwork in precious metal such as objets d'art and church items and not just specifically refer to objects worn on the person.
