Battlefield is a series of shooter video games from the perspective of first person that started out on Microsoft Windows and OS X with Battlefield 1942, which was released in 2002. The series is published by American company Electronic Arts and developed by Swedish company EA DICE. The series features a specific focus on teamwork, large maps and vehicle warfare. The PC games in the series are heavily focused on online multiplayer. As of 2012, the Battlefield series was played by more than 50 million players worldwide across 11 games and 12 expansion packs released since its inception in 2002. Battlefield series games usually lay its focus on large, online multiplayer battles. Playing by making squads has become a major element of games in the series. The series has centrally started recording online stats for each player, since Battlefield 2, allowing users to receive rank promotions and weapon unlocks based on their performance as well as awards such as ribbons, medals, and pins. A class system is present within all the Battlefield games where each class features a different sort of primary weapon along with different equipment, distinguishing roles on the battlefield. The series has also included an award of dog tags for each player killed using a knife, since Battlefield 2142.
