A gunshot is described as a single discharge of the bullet from the gun, generally a man portable firearm, often producing a visible flash, a loud and powerful shockwave and many times chemical gunshot residue. The discharge of one or more than one firearms, multiple, is known as the act of gunfire. The word gunfire can simply connote either the sound of gun firing or the projectiles that were fire or both of the above. Per say, the statement, gun fire came from the next street, could either mean the bullets that were discharged or could also mean the sound of the discharge. 

Hence, it is always beneficial to be more specific while mentioning the word gunfire. We came under gunfire or the sound of gunfire, tends to be more descriptive and hence prevents confusion. In the first phrase, in particular, fire is more commonly used, as both the words tend to hold the same general meaning, provided mention in a proper context. One can note that there exists various primary attributes that characterize gunfire. This helps in enabling the required party to detect the location of gunfire and similar weapon discharges.
