Crows are of the genus Corvus which belong to the family Corvidae. They vary in sizes from medium to large. They are carnivorous birds and also fall under the category of scavengers. The genus includes the crow - carrion or hooded crow, jackdaw, the rook and the large common raven. The genus consists of around 40 members on all temperate continents. However, South America and some islands are exceptions for their habitations. The Corvus comprises of about one third of the species in the Corvidae. Crows are believed to have evolved in Asia from corvid stock which, although, had evolved in Australia. The collective noun for a group of crows is a flock. However, in poetic terms it is also referred to as a murder. Some species of crows not only use tools but also make them. Crows are now believed to be among the world's most intelligent birds along with parrots. They have a brain size that is in accordance with their body size and is as large as that of some apes. The European magpie and the jackdaw have a nidopallium which is about the same size as the equivalent neocortex in chimpanzees. Moreover, it is significantly larger than what is found in the gibbon. There is also a famous folklore of how a girl fed crows and in return they brought her tiny gifts which shows what the birds are capable of.
