Rats are various long-tailed rodents of medium size. Species of rats are found throughout the order Rodentia but rats, stereotypically, are found in the genus Rattus. Other rat genera include Bandicota (bandicoot rats), Neotoma (pack rats) and Dipodomys (kangaroo rats). Rats are distinguished from mice based upon their size. Normally, when someone discovers a large muroid rodent, its common name includes the term rat, however, if it is smaller, its name includes the term mouse. The common terms rat and mouse are terminologically not specific. The best-known species of rat are the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (Rattus rattus). Rats are bigger than most of the Old World mice, which, although are their relatives, but seldom weigh over 500 grams or 1.1 lb in the wild. Examples include the North American pack rats, also known as wood rats and a number of species casually called kangaroo rats. Rats such as the bandicoot rat (Bandicota bengalensis) are murine rodents related to true rats but do not belong to the genus Rattus. Male rats are called bucks while unmated females are called does. Pregnant as well as parent females are called dams whereas infants are called kittens or pups. A group of rats is known as a mischief.
