Tulips or Tulipa form a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes which means that they have bulbs as their storage organs. The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly colored, having generally red, yellow, pink, or white colours. They often have a different coloured blotch at the base of the tepals internally, which collectively refers to petals and sepals. Due to its degree of variability within the populations as well as a long history of cultivation, classification of the flower has been quite complex and controversial. The tulip belongs to the lily family, Liliaceae along with 14 other genera where it is most closely related to Amana, Gagea and Erythronium in the tribe Lilieae. There are about 75 species which are divided among four subgenera. The name tulip is has been derived from a Persian word for turban due to its resemblance to it. Although, the tulips were originally found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, however, since the seventeenth century, they have become widely naturalised and cultivated. They are adapted to steppes and mountainous areas with temperate climates in their natural states. They flower during the spring and become dormant in the summer once the flowers and leaves die back while emerging above ground as a shoot from the underground bulb in early spring.
