A wolf is a canine native to the remote areas of Eurasia and North America. It is one of the world's best known and most-researched animal with more number of books written about it than any other wild species. The current global population of wolf, as of 2019, is 300,000. It primarily feeds on large wild mammals, smaller animals, livestock, carrion as well as garbage. The maximum lifespan of a wolf is just 16 years. A running wolf quickly achieves a speed of 55-70 km per hour.
It is the largest member of Canidae family. Though it is slender, it has a deeply descending rib cage, sloping back and a heavily muscled neck. It moves swiftly and easily overcomes the deep snow. Their ears are small and triangular. Males are found to have broader muzzles and foreheads, thicker necks, slightly longer legs and more massive shoulders than females. They have very dense and furry winter fur which provides them insulation even when the temperature falls down to – 40 degree Celsius. Wolf fur provides better insulation than dog fur and it doesn't collect ice when warm breathe is condensed against it. In the warm climate, the fur becomes coarser and scarcer.
