Luigi is a fictional character that featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. It was created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Luigi is portrayed as the taller but slightly younger fraternal twin brother of mascot of Nintendo, Mario, and appears in many games throughout the Mario franchise, often as a sidekick to his older brother. Luigi first appeared in the year 1983 arcade game called Mario Bros, as the character controlled by the second player and retained this role in Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and some other games as well. The first game in which he was available as a primary character was Super Mario Bros 2. Luigi's role became increasingly restricted in more recent appearances, limiting him just to spinoffs such as the Mario Party and Mario Kart series, though he has been featured in a starring role on four occasions - first in the 1991 educational game, titled, Mario Is Missing!, in "Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon" for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, in "Luigi's Mansion" for the GameCube in 2001, and "Luigi's Mansion 3" for Nintendo Switch in 2019. He is called upon to act as the hero in all four of these games because Mario, the usual hero within the franchise, is in need of rescue.
