Batgirl is one of the several fictional super-heroines that appear in American comic books published by DC Comics. She has been depicted as the female counterpart to the DC Comics' superhero Batman. Albeit, in the year 1961, the character Betty Kane was introduced into publication by Sheldon Moldoff and Bill Finger as Bat-Girl, in 1967, she was replaced by Barbara Gordon who later was later identified as the iconic Batgirl. The character debuted in Detective Comics #359 which was published in January 1967, by writer Gardner Fox along with the artist Carmine Infantino who was introduced as the daughter of police commissioner James Gordon. Batgirl operates in Gotham City and forms an alliance with none other than Batman along with the original Robin, Dick Grayson and other masked vigilantes. The appearance of the character in Detective Comics, such as Batman Family, and several other books has been quite regular since the creation of it by DC, until 1988. Barbara Gordon appeared in Barbara Kesel's Batgirl Special #1 that year, in which she retires from fighting crime in the Gotham City. She subsequently appeared in the graphic novel by Alan Moore, Batman: The Killing Joke where, in her civilian identity, she is shot by the Joker and left paraplegic.
