Even though in many cultures its an accepted notion that anyone can practice magic, however some charms and spells can only be recited by certain people who are chosen, called wizards and witches. One can simply state that some charms can be recited by anyone with no specialist knowledge nor any claim to specific powers, whereas others require specialized training and abilities to perform magic. People performing magical arts more often, earlier came to be known as magicians or with some related concepts like sorcerers/sorceresses, cunning folk or witches. The identity of a magician can be a label placed upon them by other people or can stem from an individual's claim about themselves. In the first case, it is mostly up to the individual to either reject the claim or accept it.
Individuals had monetary incentives, which encouraged them to have such claims about themselves. The label of being a magician can soon turn into a job profession as well in the modern way. These forms came into the picture by evolving from various forms of traditional healers and later stage magicians. Many people also happen to the identity while the genuinely to have such extinguished powers. One can note, different societies have different notations about the role and who can own it.
