A syringe is an object, basically a simple reciprocating pump consisting of a plunger, even though in the modern syringes it is replaced by a piston, that should fit tightly fit within the cylindrical tube called a barrel. The plunger can be linearly or horizontally pulled and pushed inside of the tube, hence allowing the syringe to take in and expel gas or liquid through a discharge orifice at the front, open end of the tube, basically this is a small hole. The open end of the tube can be fitted with a nozzle, a hypodermic needle or turbing to direct the flow out and into the barrel. The major use of syringes is majorly in clinical medicine to administer injections, infuse intravenous therapy into bloodstream, apply compounds such as lubricant or glue and measure/draw liquids or gases.

The word syringe has its origin from the Greek language. Sectors in needle and syringe market include safety and disposable syringes, needleless injectors, injection pens, insulin pumps and speciality needles. The use of hypodermic syringes is done along with hypodermic needles in order to inject gases or liquids into body tissues or to remove them from the body. The injection of air into blood vessels is hazardous as it can cause an air embolism.
