Tom and Jerry, created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1940, is an American animated series. It a compilation of short comedy films circulating around the rivalry between two characters of Tom, a cat and Jerry, a mouse. It is best known for its 161 theatrical short films by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. 114 shorts were produced by Hanna and Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during its original run from 1940-1958. They won seven awards for Academy Awards for Animated Short Films during this time. It tied for first place for the most awarded in the category with Walt Disney's SIlly Symphonies. The series was revived after the closing of MGM Cartoon Studio in 1957 by the help of Gene Deitch as the director. He directed 13 additional shorts of Tom and Jerry for Rembrandt Films from 1961 to 1962. Overtaking Looney Tunes it became the highest grossing animated short film series of that time. Another 34 shorts were produced by Chuck Jones, with Sib Tower 12 productions between 1963 and 1967. To make it a total of 164 shorts, three more shorts were added, namely: The Mansion Cat in 2001, The Karate Guard in 2005, A Fund Raising Adventure in 2014. Including the show, a number of spinoffs have also been made, like The Tom and Jerry Show, The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show, Tom and Jerry Tales etc.
