Junk food is food which is unhealthy food and is said to have high calories from fat and sugar, along with little protein, dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins or other forms of nutritional value. The precise definition of junk food might vary by purpose from time to time and from place to place. Some high protein foods such as meat prepared with saturated fat and that might be considered as junk food. HFSS ( high in fat, sugar and salt) foods is the term used synonymously for junk food. Fast food restaurants and fast food are many times equated with junk food, although fast foods cannot be categorically named as junk food. Processed food is mostly described as junk food.

There are concerns raised by the society about the negative health effects resulting from a junk food heavy diet, especially obesity, generally have resulted in public health awareness campaigns and restricting in allowance of advertising and sales in various countries. One can say that junk food is a pejorative term, dating back at least to the 1950s. The credit for the origin of the term could be given to Michael F. Jacobson of the Centre for science in the Public interest in the 1972.
