Monitor or a computer monitor is a device that shows the output in a pictorial form. The main components of monitor comprises of a display device, casing, circuitry and power supply. In the modern monitors the display device is typically a thin film transistor liquid crystal display supported with LED backlighting which has replaced cold cathode fluorescent lamp backlighting. Cathode ray tube was used in the monitors of older times. The connection between the monitor and the computer is made through Digital Visual Interface (DVI), VGA, HDMI, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, low voltage differential signaling or other proprietary signals and connectors. 

Originally, the use of computer monitors was for data processing whereas for entertainment, television sets were used. The changes for the distinction of televisions and computers was done 1980s onwards, computers and their monitors were now used for both the purposes of entertainment and processing whereas televisions have implemented some computer functionality. Their has also been a change in the common aspect ratio of computer monitors and television, changing from 4:3 to 16:10 to 16:9. Monitors today are also conveniently interchangeable with conventional television sets. Since, the computer monitors may not include inherited audio speakers one might need to attach extra external components in order to use it as a television set.
