A demon is a supernatural being prevalent historically in religion, mythology, literature, occultism, fiction, and folklore as well as in media such as movies and television series, comics and videogames. The original Greek word daimon, of which the demon is derivative, does not carry any negative connotations. The Ancient Greek word daimon denotes a spirit or divine power which is similar to the Latin genius or numen. The Greek conception of a daimon is apparent in the works of Plato, where it construes the divine inspiration of Socrates. A demon is considered a harmful spiritual entity which may cause demonic possession, calling for an exorcism, according to the Ancient Near Eastern religions, the Abrahamic traditions and the ancient and medieval Christian demonology. As per the Western occultism and Renaissance magic that grew out of an amalgamation of Greco-Roman magic, Christian demonology and Jewish Aggadah, a demon is believed to be a spiritual entity which can be conjured and controlled. Daimon most likely came from the Greek verb daiesthai which means to divide or to distribute. The anticipated or believed existence of demons remains an important concept in many modern religions and occultist traditions. Demons are still feared for their alleged power to possess living creatures.
