A berry is a pulpy, small and often an edible fruit. Typically, berries are juicy, brightly colored, rounded, sour, sweet or tart, and do not have a stone or pit, albeit, many pips or seeds may be present. Common examples are strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, red currants and white currants. Soft fruit is a horticultural term for such fruits in Britain. The scientific usage of the term "berry" is different from its common usage. In scientific portmanteau, a berry is a fruit that is produced from the ovary of a single flower in which the outer layer of the ovary wall develops and turns into an edible fleshy portion called pericarp. The definition includes many fruits as well that are not commonly known as berries, such as tomatoes, eggplants, grapes, cucumbers, bananas, and chili peppers. Fruits excluded by the botanical definition include strawberries, blackberries and raspberries which are aggregate fruits and mulberries, which are referred to as multiple fruits. A plant that bears berries is said to be baccate or bacciferous . Pumpkins and watermelons are also said to be giant berries that fall into the category "pepos". While many berries are edible, some are poisonous to humans, such as pokeweed and deadly nightshade. Others, such as the red mulberry, white mulberry and elderberry are edible when ripe but poisonous when unripe.
