Science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world with the help of experiments and their outcomes and observations. The primal roots of science trace back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and is believed to have originated in between 3500 and 3000 BCE. Their contributions to fields such as mathematics, astronomy and medicine has helped in shaping the natural philosophy of classical antiquity of Greek, whereby attempts were made in a formal and systematic manner to provide explanations of occurrences in the physical world based on natural phenomena. Modern science or the basic science of the present world is typically divided into three major branches that consist of the natural sciences namely, biology, chemistry, and physics which study nature in comprehensive sense. The second on is called social sciences under which lie the subjects such as economics, psychology, and sociology. These sciences are involved with studying individuals and societies as a whole and as fragments, in depth. The third one is called formal sciences, like, logic, mathematics, and theoretical computer science, which try to fathom abstract concepts. There is, however, a disagreement on whether the formal sciences actually constitute a science since they do not precisely rely on empirical evidence. And lastly, sciences or systems that use existing scientific knowledge for practical purposes, such as engineering and medicine, are described as applied sciences.
