An hourglass or sandglass, sand timer, sand clock or egg timer is a machine used to measure the passage of time. It consists of two glass bulbs linked vertically with the aid of a slender neck that approves a regulated waft of a substance (historically sand) from the higher bulb to the decrease one. Typically the top and decrease bulbs are symmetric so that the hourglass will measure the equal length regardless of orientation.
The particular length of time a given hourglass measures is decided via elements which include the extent and coarseness of the particulate matter, the bulb dimension and the neck width. Depictions of an hourglass as a image of the passage of time are located in art, mainly on tombstones or different monuments, from antiquity to the current day. The shape of a winged hourglass has been used as a literal depiction of the popular Latin epitaph tempus fugit "time flies".
