An award is a recognition given to a person or a group of people or an organization for excellence in a certain field. It is basically a reward given for doing something well. It might be accompanied by a trophy, title, certificate, medal, badge, pin or cash. In military, the officers get medals or badges. It depends on the purpose. While the Nobel Prize recognizes contributions to the society, Pulitzer Prize is for literary achievements. In some cases, an award may be just a public acknowledgement of excellence without any tangible token or prize attached to it. Sometimes an award may simply recognize participation rather than victory. It feels great to win an award because it implies that our work is getting appreciated. This helps people to do even better in their respective fields. They not only get fame but also inner satisfaction. Thus, this leads to the betterment of the society and welfare of the people.
The most prestigious international award in the world for intellectual achievement is the Nobel Prize. It is available in different fields like medicine, physics, literature, peace, economics and chemistry. In India, the highest orders of awards are Padma Vibhusan, Padma Bhusan and Padma Shri.
