WiFi is a family of wireless networking development and technologies, being based on the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. These are generally used for local area networking of devices and availing internet access. Wi-Fi is also known to be a trademark of the non profit Wi-Fi alliance, which happens to restrict the use of the term Wifi certified to products that successfully complete interoperability certification testing. According to the reports as in received by 2010, there are more than 375 companies from around the world that are part of the Wifi Alliance. The wifi integrated chips were shipped to approximately 580 million units per year, according to the reports as of 2009. Some of the devices which can use the technology of wifi are smart TVs, smartphones, laptops and desktops, tablets, printers, digital cameras, digital audio players, drones and cars. In the operation of wifi multiple parts of the IEEE 802 protocol family are used and is designed to seamlessly interwork with its wired sibling Ethernet. It has also been helpful in connecting compatible devices to network through a wireless access point to each other and to the wired devices to internet. The various versions of wifi can be specified using the IEEE 802.11 protocol standards.
