Chat may refer to any type of communication over the internet which offer the real time transmission of text messages from the sender to the receiver and vice-versa. Generally the chat messages are kept short in order to enable the other participants respond quickly, hence creating a situation or feeling similar to that of the spoken communication. This helps to distinguish chatting (the process of carrying on the chat is called chatting) from the other text based online communication options such as emails and internet forums. The online communications, specifically chat, may cater to point to point communications or multicast communications from one sender to many and voice and video chats or might be a feature of video conferencing service.
A less stringent definition of online chat can be that any text based or video based/webcams, one to many group chat ( which can also be referred as synchronous conferencing or one to one chat), using tools such as Instant Relay Chat, instant messenger and talkers. The origin of the word chat or online chat came from the word chat which means 'indirect conversation'. Talkomatic was the first online chatting system ever known, created by David R. B Woolley and Dough Brown in 1973, on the PLATO system at the university of Illinois.
