A calendar is a system or way of organizing days and dates for social, commercial, religious or administrative purposes. This system is prepared by giving names to periods of time, typically days, weeks, months and years. One can define a date as the designation of a single and specific day within the system of a calendar only. A calendar can also be kept as a physical record, either on paper or digitally, such a system. One can also mean a list of planned events while referring to a calendar, for example a court calendar or a fully or partially chronological list of documents such as a calendar of wills.
Periods in a calendar such as months and years are generally but not necessarily, synchronized with the cycle of moon or the sun. The most popular type of modern day calendar is the lunisolar calendar. A lunisolar calendar is a lunar calendar only which adds one intercalary month in order to remain synchronised with the solar year over the long term. The origin of the word calendar comes from the Latin term adopted from an Old French word calendier and from there in Middle English in the 13th century, it turned to calendar.
