Guava is a common tropical fruit which is cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions. Psidium guajava which is commonly referred to as lemon guava or just guava is a small tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) which is native to Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean and northern South America. There are some related species as well which may also be called guavas, however, they belong to other species or genera, such as the pineapple guava or Acca sellowiana. India was the largest producer of guavas as of 2016, with 41% of the worldwide harvest. Guavas originated from an area believed to be an extent of Mexico or Central America and were distributed throughout tropical America and the Caribbean region. They were adopted as a crop in tropical and subtropical Asia, tropical Africa, the southern United States (from Tennessee and North Carolina south, as well as the west and Hawaii), South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Guavas are now cultivated in many tropical and subtropical countries where several species are grown commercially. The apple guava and its cultivars are most commonly traded internationally. Guavas also grow in southwestern Europe, specifically around the Costa del Sol on Malaga which is in Spain. Greece is a country where guavas have been commercially grown since the middle of the 20th century and they proliferate as cultivars. Mature trees of most species are fairly cold and hard and can survive temperatures slightly colder than 25 °F or 4 °C for short periods of time, however younger plants are more likely to freeze to the ground.
