Cosplay is a valise of the words costume play. It is a performance art in which the participants or the so called “cosplayers” wear the same costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character. Cosplayers often interact so as to create a subculture and a wider use of the term "cosplay" applies to any costumed role-playing at the venues apart from the stage. Any entity that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject and it is not unusual to witness the genders switched. Favorite sources include anime, comic books, manga, cartoons, television series and video games. The rapid growth in the number of people cosplaying as a hobby has made the phenomenon a significant aspect of popular culture in Japan and some other parts of Asia and in the Western world as well, since the 1990s. Cosplay events are common features of fan conventions and there are also dedicated conventions and local and even international competitions, as well as websites, social networks and other forms of media centered on cosplay activities. The term "cosplay" was forged in Japan in 1984. The term and idea of “cosplay” was inspired by and grew out of the practice of fans wearing costumes at science fiction conventions, beginning with Morojo's "futuristicostumes" which was made for the first ever World Science Fiction Convention held in New York City in 1939.
