The Panther of the gene Panthera is a large member of the big cat family which is native to Asia, Africa and the Americas. The Panther is not a distinct species itself but is rather used to refer to any black coloured feline of the big cat family such as Leopards and Jaguars. The Panther is an elusive and dynamic animal that has adapted well to a variety of habitats around the world and is known to be one of the most capable climbers of all felines. Although the Panther is not technically classified as a specific species, however, they are considered to be endangered due to the declining numbers of both Leopards and Jaguars throughout their natural habitats. The Panther ranges from dark brown to black in colour. In all the other terms it is identical to the feline species to which it belongs. The only exception is observed in the case of Florida Panther found in the south east region of the USA which is believed to be a subspecies of Cougar and is quite rarely dark brown in colour and, in addition, tends to have more of a speckled appearance. The Panther has no spots on its long body or tail, as compared to Leopards and Jaguars. Instead, it has a shiny coat of dark fur. Panthers have emerald green eyes with small heads with strong jaws along with hind legs that are both larger and slightly longer than the ones at the front.
