Flamingos or flamingoes are a kind of wading fowl within the circle of relatives phoenicopteridae, the simplest chicken family within the order phoenicopteriformes. Four flamingo species are allotted at some point of the americas, together with the caribbean, and two species are local to africa, asia, and europe. The call "flamingo" comes from portuguese or spanish flamengo, "flame-coloured", in flip coming from establishedcal flamenc from flama "flame" and germanic-like suffix -ing, with a likely affect of the spanish ethnonym flamenco "fleming" or "flemish". The universal name phoenicopterus (from greek: phoinikopteros), literally method "blood pink-feathered" has a comparable etymology to the commonplace name; different genera encompass phoeniconaias, which means "red/red water nymph (or naiad)", and phoenicoparrus, which means that "purple/purple chook (although, an unknown bird of omen)". Flamingos typically stand on one leg, with the alternative being tucked under the frame. The reason for this behaviour is not completely understood.
One theory is that standing on one leg allows the birds to preserve extra body warmth, given that they spend a significant quantity of time wading in bloodless water. But, the behaviour also takes location in warm water and is likewise observed in birds that don't typically stand in water. An opportunity theory is that status on one leg reduces the energy expenditure for producing muscular attempt to face and stability on one leg.
