Cows are very important and prime domestic animals. She has a large body, four legs, two horns, long and wide back. They are found in almost every region of the country. They are used as livestock, mainly for milk and milk products. In some western countries, cows are also reared for meat and hide. In chiefly agricultural economy such as India, cows are revered for their productivity and Hindus give their cows a social status as equivalent to a mother. She is considered holiest among all the animals and is called as "Gau Mata". Their low cost of maintenance and high productive value have made cows, one of the man's most favored livestock. Cow's milk is used for holy purposes.
Cows found in our country are however smaller in size than those found in other countries. They eat green grass, food grains and hay. They chew their food properly by taking a lot of time and then swallow it to the stomach. They take 12 months to give birth to a small calf. One interesting fact about them is that they don't teach their young ones how to walk or run. The calves start walking and running immediately after birth.
