Introduction to the Open Clip Art Library
The purpose of this document is to give you a brief overview of the Open Clip Art Library and how it works.
The Open Clip Art Library's ultimate goal is to create a vast collection of Public Domain Clipart. We achieve this by allowing anyone to upload their artwork into the collection, providing that they declare it Public Domain
All the images in the Open Clip Art Library are in the public domain. This means that the artist that created a particular image have relinquished all copyright of the artwork. For someone downloading this image, it says that you can change or alter the image in any manner, and use it for both commercial and non-commercial envionments, without ever worrying about copyright.
What is Public Domain?
What is SVG format, and why does the library use it?
You may have noticed that all the images in the Open Clip Art Library are in a format called SVG . SVG is an acronymn for Scalable Vector Graphics and is a format devised by the W3C (http://www.w3.org/ ) for a standardised vector graphics format.
There are two main types of image files - Raster and Vector .
Raster images include filetypes like Bitmap, PNG, JPEG and GIF.
Vector images include filetypes like SVG and WMF
As a Vector format, SVG provides perfect scalability and are resolution independent. Therefore, even though the image may be small, you can resize it and it does not appear pixelated the way raster images do when resized.
Why can't i view SVG images in my browser?
Some internet browsers do not natively render SVG images, however, with time and the growing popularity of SVG, most browsers will support SVG. Two of the most popular browsers that do render SVG are Firefox and Opera . Have a browse through the Open Clip Art Wiki (http://www.openclipart.org/wiki ) for more tools to use with the SVG format
What programs can i use Open Clip Art Library images in?
Not many programs actually support using SVG at the present time. The best way to use these images is to get an SVG editor like Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/ ) load up the images, and export them as bitmaps.
Who can upload an Image to the Library?
Anyone can upload their artwork into the collection. Even if you don't think it is up to standard, upload it, and someone might remix it, improve it and reupload it. The Open Clip Art Library is all about a community of Artists and Users building a source of great images for anyone to use.
