A Dream is a succession of ideas, images, sensations and emotions that generally emerge unconsciously in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The purpose and content of sleep are not completely understood, even though dreams have been a topic of philosophical, scientific and religious interest throughout recorded history. The interpretation of dreams also known as dream interpretation is said to be a technique or an attempt at concluding the meaning from dreams and searching for the underlying reasons and messages. Oneirology is the name given to the scientific study of dreams.
The stage of sleep during which dreams mainly occur is known to be the rapid eye movement stage (REM). At this stage the brain activity is high and resembles that of being awake. The stage of the rapid eye movement is revealed by the continuous eye movements of the eye during sleep. But it is also observed that the dreams may also occur during the other stages of sleep as well. However, these dreams have a tendency to be much less memorable or vivid. The duration of the dream can vary between different intervals of time, it may be as long as twenty - thirty minutes or can be as short as approximately a few seconds.
