Black Widow is an upcoming movie, scheduled to be released on May 1, 2020 theatrically in the United States. This American superhero film takes its reference from the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The film is destined to be the twenty-fourth film in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and produced by Marvel Studios. Written by Ned Benson and Jac Schaeffer, directed by Cate Shortland, the film stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, alongside David Harbour, O-T Fagbenie, Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz. The film continues to see Romanoff on the run and forced to confront her past, this is the succeeded version of the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016).
The film Black Widow's development was begun by Lionsgate in 2004, with David Hayter attached to write and direct. The project did not move back then and its rights to the character were given to Marvel Studios by 2006. Beginning from Iron Man 2, 2010, Johansson was cast in the role for several MCU movies. Over the following years Marvel and Johansson have displayed their interest in working on a solo film several times, before hiring Schaeffer and Shortland in 2018.
